The Museum invites visitors to enjoy exhibits of coal and railroad memorabilia, donated by the residents and former residents of Dante and the surrounding communities. This building is now the home of the Dante History Project display, which traveled around Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky for two years in the late 1990s. School groups are particularly welcome to visit the Museum so that students can meet miners and railroad workers and learn about life and work in the company coal town.
The Dante Coal Mining and Railroad Museum is located in the former Dante Branch of the Dickenson County Bank, built in 1919. |
Our latest addition to the museum is a scale model of the downtown area during the early 1900's. Future plans include an education area where the public can access genealogical and historical records and listen to the recorded voices of people who were interviewed for the Dante History Project. A simulated mine entrance will be built in the old bank vault.

Museum hours are M, T, TH, F - 11:00 am - 3:30 pm, 2nd & 4th Saturday - 11:00 am - 3:30 pm or by appointment. For more information about the museum, Dante Lives On, or if you have an item to donate or loan, please call the Museum at 276-495-1903.
